A Seventh-day Adventist Church member in Port Harcourt Conference, Esther Nworgu on Friday 28 October 2022 proved to the world that there is ability in disability; as her record helped Nigeria continue her dominance in para- powerlifting.
Esther
airmailed a huge performance as her 114kg lift set a new world record in the
women’s up to 41kg class that ensure Nigeria came top winning a total of twelve medals, nine
gold and three silver at the end of the four-day event, at the just concluded African
Open Para-powerlifting Championships
that ended in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday.
Esther hails from Umuaka, Ogwe District in Aba West Mission. She sustained her impairment at age eight.
And in 2014, she first tried powerlifting and began training seriously in 2016.
She was introduced to Para sport at a meeting for women with impairments. She
tried several sports but chose to specialize in powerlifting.
In Her free time she enjoys Singing, attending concerts and musical performances, going to the gym. (Facebook profile, 19 Apr 2022). She has worked as a typist and a teacher in Port Harcourt, Rivers State where she resides.
Other para-atletes who won individual gold medals for the country are, Roland Ezuruike, Esther Nworgu, Latifat Tijani, Kafila Almaruf, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Onyinyechi Gift Mark, Loveline Obiji and Bose Omolayo.
Nigeria also won gold in the Teams Event for Women.This edition of the African Open Championships is the biggest ever as it allowed participants outside of the continent for the first time.
Over 166 athletes (104 male, 62 female) from
27 countries competed in ten weight classes at the Championships.
