Port Harcourt East Conference (PHEC) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church witnessed an unforgettable climax to its 2024 Community Service/wee of Emphasis, as heartwarming stories poured in from the 20 districts that make up the conference.
From Okirika Church, the tranquil towns of Umuomara, Okehi, and Ulakwo in the Etche Zone, and the lively metropolis of Rumuokwuta, Azuabie, Woji, and Elekahia all had an exhilarating worship atmosphere, it was nothing short of electrifying. Each church lived up to this year's theme, "Saved to Serve," as they showed how Adventist can be a light to the world outside of church walls.
Guests from the surrounding neighborhoods were warmly welcomed into each worship session, the synergy with the Sabbath School, Personal Ministry (PM), Children Ministries etc. The adoption of the Church’s Total Member Involvement (TMI) principle ensured that no Guest left without feeling loved, and cared for.
Every effort was made to leave a lasting impression, and the community guests—many first-time visitors—were touched by the warmth and hospitality of our congregation.
The stories of service that emerged during the week painted a powerful picture of unity and purpose. Several churches expressed gratitude by visiting the sick, handing out bottled water to market women, and sharing bread with the less privileged. Church lawyers provided free legal advice and education, while the youth spent time teaching and inspiring secondary school students to aim for success. The medical teams offered free health care, including lifestyle advice, blood pressure and sugar tests, and tips on healthy dieting.
Some churches went out to repair damaged roads, organize cleanup efforts, and lead awareness campaigns in their communities. Through these acts of service, both large and small, Adventist Church members truly lived out their faith, demonstrating that salvation comes with the duty to serve others.
In a powerful conclusion to the week, guest preachers posted to various churches delivered soul-stirring sermons titled Are You Saved?. They reminded the congregation that salvation is not just a gift but a calling—a calling to serve humanity with love, kindness, and selflessness.
As we await more reports from our field, one thing very striking as the echoes of this week of service fade into memory is that the Adventist Churches in Port Harcourt East Conference is dedicated to making the world around them a better place.
