"Each of us is on an exceptional life path. The path we follow defines our individuality. What makes others great and less is how we spend our energy, thoughts, and time, as well as how we respond to whom and what we encounter"
Ekpor Temple
I’ve been thinking about the concept of individuality a lot lately. Many people today would say that you are the things you like: what clothes you wear, which car you drive, what type of coffee you drink, which bands you listen to. But when you really think about it, all those things are just the stuff you buy. Companies just encourage us to “express ourselves” through our purchase decisions, so we get emotionally attached to their products and buy more stuff.
SO What makes you YOU? Is it your personal preferences? The things you own? The things you do? Your consciousness or the things you create?
When you take away all your possessions and personal preferences, what’s left? It’s the things you do in life, and your ideas. But even those things are fluid; they change over time as we become more mature and have different experiences. I am not the same person I was 5 years ago. I don’t do the same things or have the same ideas.
So if it isn’t your actions or ideas that make you you, could it be your consciousness?
Energy concentrated into a cluster of atoms that make up your brain and produce an experience, which we perceive as consciousness? Or could it be that none of us are really all that unique, and we just think we are because our own experience is the only one we have access to?
They are thought-provoking and often not easy to answer.
What defines a man as an individual
Mahatma Ghandi once said, “He who loses his individuality loses all.” First, we are, each of us, living in individual bodies. No one else is living inside our bodies (with rare exceptions- conjoined twins, chimeras...).
Our DNA makes us unique and individual, and also ties us to our parents and ancestors. The interaction of our genetic potentials with our environment, with our life experiences, makes us unique, individual. What experiences we have and how we interpret them makes us unique, individual.
Our interaction with others and our environment, the choices we make and do not make, make us unique, individual. The meaning we make out of our lives, the stories and narratives we engage in, may be part of a larger story.
Therefore, it is truthful to say that your individuality is now determined by the purposes you embrace in life and how you go about pursuing them. Should you lose those aspects of your individuality, it will greatly diminish your personality and what you stand for.
It is only when we can define the important part of our individuality and creates meaning in our own lives and the lives of others. Then, we can set a more meaningful path for our lives or reinforce the one we are on. By acting on them, we further develop and actualize our authentic self.
